I know it's taken me a while to post about this deck. I've been getting to know it a little bit, just looking through the cards. I tend to try and look at the suits and minors all spread out at first. I also like to play solitaire with a new deck - it's a good way of getting familiar with the images without trying too hard. I've done a few daily card draws but haven't read with it yet.
First impressions...
Very pretty. We knew that already. :-)
There are some surprising cards. The 8 of Cups completely breaks the white space rule and goes up to the card edges, but it works and it's a stunning card. The 9 of Cups, 8 of Wands and 7 of Swords do also.
The Knights are interesting. Swords and Pents are framed in circles. The Knight of Swords, with his complete circle, seems more focused, which is a nice touch. The Knight of Wands is a little odd. It's hard to make him out.
There are ever so slight style variations. On the whole I love the art. But the World, for example, seems more manga in style to me. And the Page of Pentacles and the 10 of Pentacles have a sort of "photocopied line drawing" feel to them. I'm being hyper picky. Overall, as I said, it's a beautiful deck and there are always one or two cards in a deck which are my least favourites. :-)
On the whole the images are RWS-like, or at least it's easy to relate them back to the RWS meanings. There are a couple, however, that bemuse me. The 8 of Pentacles is one. To be fair, I haven't looked it up in the guidebook yet so maybe that will explain why she's depicted it the way she has. At the moment, the image seems to bear no relation to what the 8 of Pents usually means.
The deck has a very calm gentle energy. It will be interesting to see how it reads.
I'll try and post some pics tomorrow. Let me know if there's any you'd like to see in particular.
