Robyn Tisch-Hollister is an artist and Tarot Creator. You can check out her work here.
What was your first experience with Tarot?
I have always been intrigued by Tarot cards, oracles, fortune tellers and the occult, ever since I can remember. I can recall seeing Tarot images as a small child, but I didn't own my first deck until I was 13. I suppose my very first experience was creating my own Major Arcana when I was 10 years old.
I didn't have any images...only the titles that I found in an almanac. Some of my drawings looked a lot like early Marseilles cards, and a couple resembled the Rider Waite Smith deck. More than a few were definitely all my own!
What inspired you to create your first deck?
I had been working on card drawings for many many years, but the first published deck happened when I signed up for a Tarot Forum. I was inspired by other artists, and the support of friends and fans helped me finish the Majors deck the Tarot of the Midnight Masquerade. The inspiration for that deck comes from my love of carnivals, masks and the mystery that surrounds them.
How many decks have you created?
Six so far!
The Tarot of the Midnight Masquerade (Majors)
The ChronaTarot (Majors)
The Minute Deck
The All Hallows Tarot
The Penguin Parade
The Tarot Noir
I have also created custom Tarot stones, and a few oracle stone sets and decks.
Which is your favourite and why?
It's so hard to choose! It's like having to choose between which of my children I like best! I have a great affection for the Midnight Masquerade, and still hope to finish the Minors at some point. The deck I use the most, however is the All Hallows. It has a sarcastic sense of humor that catches me off guard, and even though I have a personal connection to many of the cards, it still surprises me.
What is your most memorable Tarot experience?
I have been reading for a few decades, and so many stories come to mind. One of the most recent memorable sessions, was reading for a remarkable young boy, who had crawled out of his house into the snow as a toddler, and died. He was resuscitated, and became a very wise and very spiritual child. I saw his whole past in the reading before they told me his history. It was an honor meeting him.
Do you have a favourite Tarot card?
I love the Magician. It's an incredible card of Will and personal Power and Manifestation. I also really like the earlier version of the card...the Batteleur, who uses trickster power and smoke and mirrors to cover what he is really doing. I can relate to both of these versions.
How has Tarot impacted on your life?
Tarot has always been a part of my life, it seems. Doing readings is a great way to connect with people, especially since I suffer from social anxiety. And knowing that my readings help people find guidance and hope, while my illustrations make people smile really feels wonderful.
Are you influenced by anyone including any Tarot creators or writers?
I don't think I read a tarot book until I had already been doing readings for 10 years.
I don't feel influenced by other creators, (except for perhaps Pamela Coleman Smith) but there are so many that I do really admire.
Any new decks in the pipeline?
Oh yes! I have done a few painting and illustrations for many more decks, including a Trickster Tarot, a parody tarot, and a handful of Lenormand Oracles.
